Short answer

The core-distribution-access model splits a network into three layers: a fast core that moves traffic between parts of the network, a distribution layer that enforces policy and routing, and an access layer where users and devices actually connect.

Why it matters

Without this structure, networks tend to grow as an unplanned mesh of switches, making troubleshooting and expansion progressively harder. A layered design keeps each part’s job clear and makes the network easier to scale and secure.
